Hi, I have bought a copy of windows xp home edditon OEM I am having problems
when I download all the 86 updates that are available to me my computer
crashes all the time I can hear the fans struggle a little (well they make a
different noise - it seams that the fans slow down) then I get restarted but
when I go to safe mode and restore to the point before I installed the
updates the system is working fine. is there anything i am doing wrong?

Also I have recently added 2gb RAM in to my computer I already had 2gb RAM
in it is dual channel and when I am in (SYSTEM) on my computer it is showing
as 3.5GB but when I load Vista from my other hard drive it is showing 4gb I
am clueless any help would be appreciative

I wouldn't be concerned with the fans, when the system is in standby it's
developing less heat, so the fans slow down, as work increases the heat also
increases.
since you have restored the system to before the updates, try downloading
the updates one at a time to isolate which one is causing the issue, (I know
it's a pain, but it's the only way to isolate which one is causing the
problem)

Cheers mate!

I thought the problems only started when I put the RAM in so I took it out
and the sytem is working fine the motherboard booklet says the ram is
compatable so that leaves me with another option NEW PSU my PSU at the moment
is knocking out 430w I am going to get one with 650w see if that works as I
have 3 sata drives and 3pci slots full so it could be a PSU problem so anyway
THANKS

What exactly do you mean that the system crashes?

That's actually not unusual. This may help explain it.

IF you're getting a PSU, then get a good PSU
PSUs are expensive. Antec is a good make. A cheaper good make is FSP.

Download speedfan.
Look at the PSU Voltages in Speedfan (I think speedfan displays them).

go to www.google.com/groups
you'd be able to find a more appropriate newsgroup for your hardware

XP is sensitive to mismatched RAM. Just because the booklet says it's
compatible doesn't mean the two sets play well together. Have you run it
with just the new RAM? Also you could run a couple of these memory testing
utilities. They run from a bootable floppy or CD. Run at least 2 at each
one for 24hrs or so. Test each set of two and with all the memory together.

For windows updates try installing a limited number at a time, no more than
5, that makes it easier to spot which one is the problem, if in fact it is
an update that's the problem.

I don't see how adding two sticks of RAM could be related to a PSU problem.

You're only seeing 3.5GB in WinXP because some of the 4GB address
space must be used for video RAM, BIOS, etc. See
http://members.cox.net/slatteryt/RAM.html

The fact that you're seeing all 4GB in Vista surprises me. I didn't
think it would do that, but then there are lots of things I didn't
know about Vista. Is it possible that you have 64-bit hardware, 32-bit
XP and 64-bit Vista?
