Collecting and storing icons in Vista is no different than with XP or OS's
previous to it, with one unfortunate exception. The exception is that you
cannot exchange icons for a shortcut on the desktop, but if you create a
folder, you can exchange icons for the folder just as before. I have many
3rd party icon harvesters, but I don't need to use them. Recognize that
Vista has hundreds if not a couple thousand intrinsic icons in System 32
..dlls and applications installed on it like Office or other 3rd party apps.
You can also collect icons by adding /favicon.ico to different urls on the
web. Some have favicons and some don't. You simply drag the favicon to the
desktop by holding down the left mouse. You then have to change its name
and then have to put it in a folder. Once in a while you have to left click
mouse drag the favicon and let it snap back 2-3 times to get it out on the
desktop. I put all the icons acquired as favicons in a folder originally
called "Favicons" which I keep on my XP boot (I simply shortcut to it).
When I do the icon exchange it opens by default. By icon exchange I mean
that you right click the folder>customize tab>change icon>browse (select
your Favicons or Ike's Icons or whatever you want to name it folder) and it
will default select when you do this the next time>clicking browse.
You asked for a Heath-Kitesque set of steps so I copied this from older
newsgroup posts:
To save a favicon or to exchange an icon for the 1000 plus icons native to
Win Vista, included in downloaded programs, and zip files for programs, you
need to do
two things if you do this manually. If you don't the favicon or the icon
you subbed for the boring explorer "e" is going to go away after you reboot
or clear Temp Int Files.
With favicons, go to the url the favicon came from and add /favicon.ico to
the url. You should be able to drag this favicon, but if you can't then pull
the small
"favicon" from the upper left corner of the folder several times like a
suspender strap and then drag it to the desktop.
1) Change the name of the favicon.
2) Put it in a folder you can call anything including "Icons."
3) If you want to exchange any shortcut icon for a favicon in XP or a folder
icon in Vista, then rt. click desktop>porperties>change icons and browse any
folders to change to that particular icon. This includes System 32, Program
Files, Download Files and Zip files. You can also exchange the shortcut
icon with the icons you
accumulate in the save icons folder referenced above as the "Happy Trail
Icon" folder.
