Even after defraging several times, I still have a lot of narrow white free
spaces in amongst the blue. Is there any way to defrag more efficiently? Many
thanks.

Defrags here look fairly pretty;
I process idle tasks, which is sort of a prefetch alignment defrag, and run
it while in windows before booting to a safe mode command prompt and
running defrag c: -v

Here the shortcut is named PreDefrag...
%windir%\system32\cmd.exe /k "Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks"
set it to run or start in %windir%

Thank you bumtracks (love the name) I will attemt to do what you suggested.

The white is freespace. If the white is sscattered, then it can adversely
impact drive performance. Unfortunately, most defrag products concentrate
on file fragmentation and not on free space fragmentation.
