After doing a raw format because of hackers, I got this
message and I don't know how to cure the prob.
File VGA.sys caused unexpected error(32768)at line 3158
in d:\xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c.
and this
File missing or corrupt<Windows root\system32\hal.dll.
How do I cure this..?

I'm sorry to say, but oh dear!

HAL is something like the "hardware address layer". A pretty fundamental
thing - its how to 'talk' to the hardware! If that is corrupt or missing,
nothing will work. Let me guess - you get this error when you boot up the PC
and the error appears on either a blue screen or black screen with white
writing? In either case, it appears before you even get windows opened?

I had this once many years ago and it was a reformat C: and start again job!
It was something pretty major that caused it in my case though - I upgraded
my PC - changed the motherboard, memory and processor and expected Windows
(98) to continue working, which of course it didn't because the chipset was
different and pretty much everything that my installation of 98 had been
talking to and configured for had gone!

If you have just done a re-format, then I'm not quite sure what has gone
wrong, but if there is nothing to loose on the PC, then just attempt a
recovery using your XP CD or just start from scratch again.
