Need help with Wake on LAN

J

Jim

I'm running a LAN with several Windows XP Pro computers. I have one remote
machine set to "hibernate" after an hour of inactivity but I'm not having
any success in getting it to restart remotely. I've tried both Magic Packet
WOL and also "ping" with on luck.

I believe I have set up both the bios and the NIC card correctly. I only way
it will come out of hibernate is if I go to the computer and use the mouse
on press the space bar on the keyboard.

Suggestions please

Are you sure you mean hibernate?

To me, with XP, Hibernate indicates a state in which memory is saved to disk
and the machine physically powered down. I haven't tested WOL in such a
state--but mouse movements, etc, shouldn't awaken it--you need to hit the
power switch or use WOL.

I suspect you are in a stand-by mode, and while I'm not certain of my ground
here, I think your best bet will be either to try a different standby mode,
or a newer driver from the nic manufacturer. I've definitely seen this
issue myself, and changing the power-saving settings or (maybe) getting a
newer driver are what has worked for me.
