Need help with upgrading from Win 98SE to Win XP Pro

J

John Mason

My current OS is Win 98SE. I am unable to install the Win XP Pro
Upgrade. It hangs. When I run the Windows Upgrade Advisor (either from
the CD-ROM or a file that I downloaded from the Microsoft website, the
Upgrade Advisor goes through the following steps until it also hangs.
The steps the Upgrade Advisor goes through are as follows:

Preparing a list of components
Preparing setup database
Preparing an upgrade report
Examining programs - It tests many files in all directories
Processing system files - The Upgrade Advisor hangs when
it gets to "DVD Movie Player." I once got the Upgrade Advisor
to display that this was being used by some other program.

If anyone can provide any guidance, I would greatly appreciate it. I
would ordinarily remove the CD drive, but I need it to install the Win
XP Pro Upgrade.

Hope to hear from someone.

Hello John,

Yes you can fix this in about 4 to 6 hours, it would be
easier to start from the beginning and take you about 1
1/2 hours.
- Copy all of you emails and files somewhere safely.
- Format the HDD
- Boot to the WinXP CD
- Have the Win98 CD available when requested to put it in.

If you would like to correspond further, I have created a
temporary email address you can contact me at:

(e-mail address removed)

Sincerely,

Craig
