Need help with SID

D

Don Cohen

System is a Gateway 700XL running XP Home/SP2, well maintained.

I used to be able to help troubleshoot my kids computers (out of town) using
Remote Access, but recently found that something changed, and I was unable
to do this. In researching this, the most likely cause is an SID issue:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555385

I then remembered that last November, I replaced the main hard drive in my
computer with a larger one, and cloned the original OS Partition, which I
had periodically backed up using Power Quest Drive Image 2002. It seems
that this resulted in a change to the SID of this computer. I do recall
that after my first boot, Windows had to re-certify the validity of my
installation. I opened up the Drive Image program, but see no access to SID
information, or mention of it whatsoever. And apparently, this is now a
defunct product, with PowerQuest having been bought by Symantec, and
basically replaced by Ghost.

So, it seems that in order to regain the ability to provide Remote
Assistance, I need to fix the SID issue. I have seen references to SysPrep
and NewSID, but I am not familiar with either of these. In fact, until this
issue surfaced, I had only the vaguest awareness of SID to begin with. I'm
pretty adept with hardware and software, but had never had need to research
or address this particular issue.

So basically I have three questions:

1. What is the safest tool to use to change the SID on my computer?

2. How do I determine what the original SID was, so I know what to change
the SID to?

3. What potential other ramifications are there if I do change the SID?

Thanks!

I read you, Don,
Can't help on the CID problem.
But,
If you have access to Partition Magic ver.7, you can still clone your drive
using COPY to an unallocated blank partition.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the reply.
I read you, Don,

I have Partition Magic 8, but am unsure how this would help. The original
hard drive from which the Image was generated, and then transferred to the
new hard drive, has since been completely reformatted (I use it as an
internal backup drive).

Cloning the current drive, which apparently has the changed SID which is
causing the Remote Assistance problem, would not seem to change that, unless
I'm missing something. And if I am, please clarify.

Thanks again.

I have an XP for dummies hand book and from what I understand, you would
have to run the remote from your kids computer, to invite you to hook up
with their computer.
This is something I haven't used, so I don't know what is involved.

Sorry,
