Need help with my Dell 8200 cooling fan:

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 model tower with a cooling fan
9232-12hbtl-2 on it. I unhooked the fan to diagnose a cooling fan that
was making tons of noise and it was not that one, it was a fan on an
AGP graphics card - I replaced that card, plugged in my fan again and
the PC keeps sending me an error message when it starts up saying
"previous fan error" or something ominious like that. The
fan obviously has the 3 wires connected to a black plug, and I think I
took it out of a matching 3 wire boot on the MOboard - but now it
won't run again. There is also a white boot with 3 wires on the
Moboard - but I honestly can't remember which one I removed it from (I
know - bad idea) - but the plug and boot seem to really go well
black/black. Whatever, could I have damaged the fan by plugging it
into the white boot? Do Ineed to re-set something to turn it on? How
do you test if it's bad? I am afraid of turning it on for more than 5
min. at a time so it will not overheat. (I even removed the fan from
the box while it is still plugged in and ran a hair dryer over the
sensor on it to see if it would turn on but no dice) - any ideas? How
do I get my fan to work???

Next time you are looking for a noisy fan, just use a drinking straw or
piece of rolled up paper to stop one fan at a time, it's a lot easier and
safer.
Does the fan turn freely? You might as well try it in the white header.
If it doesn't work in either, it is broken, replace it!
Mike.
