Need Help with a Wireless Setup

D

David Nelms

First thing I had a wired Ethernet setup with 2 other computer and my host
computer, my DLink switch died, so I decided to go the wireless route. So I
bought the Linksys Wireless Network kit so I could use the wireless card in
my laptop. Anyway cable or DSL in not avaiable here yet (supposely soon). So
I have a dialup connection on my host (OS is XP home) and a network card. So
I ran a cable from the network card to the #1 port on the router switch. For
the time being, I'm using the existing ethernet cable for the other 2
computers. I added the Wireless card in the laptop. After much playing
around I finally got all the computers to see each other. But I absolutely
can't get internet working on any of the other computers. I've run Network
Setup wizard on all machines and configured for ICS. I've been on with
Linksys tech 3 times and the last thing said was the dialup will not work
with the router. Does anyonehave any ideas before I take thiks back to
BestBuy and just buy a new switch!!

Thanks
David

I think what he was referring to is the router can't connect to dialup. The
router is able to connect to all computers so you should be able to connect
to the ICS machine and get online. If you are not running static ip's that
would help. According to my linksys box is say "All-in-one internet-sharing
Router, 4-port Switch, and Wireless-G (draft 802.11g) Access Point" with
that in mind if you connected to the net before with the D-Link switch you
should be able to do the same with the Linksys. Some thing that stop this
are firewalls and not having a solid connection to the host ICS. With out
the presents of Cable or DSL the router just acts like a hub but controls
which command and what machine is handled first.

Well I am running the ICF on the dial up connection. I've tried letting the
network adapter (On the ICS host) automatically and I've tried setting the
network adapter (on the host) at 192.168.0.1 and then released and renewed
the adresses. Still can't get the internet to work on the wired machines.
I'm not sure what could be different.

Any help or suggestions is sure welcomed.

I turn the computer off it looses the setting.

You need to use the wireless router as a wireless access point only,
bypassing its routing and DHCP capabilities:

1. Disconnect the ICS host computer and all but one of the client
computers from the router.

3. Reboot the client or disable/enable its network connection so that
it gets a new IP address from the router's DHCP server.

4. Connect to the router's built-in web server, which is usually at an
address like http://192.168.1.1

5. Disable the router's DHCP server so that all of the computers will
get their IP addresses from the ICS host computer.

6. Change the router's LAN IP address to 192.168.0.254 to be
compatible with ICS.

7. Connect the other computers to the router's LAN ports, and don't
connect anything to its WAN port. I'm not sure which type of port
"#1" is.

8. Reboot all of the computers or enable/disable their LAN
connections.

This is where I am lost. Yes, I understand what you're saying to do and
understand how to do it, if there was something to change.. But I have no
drivers or software for the router. The setup disk only gives you two
install options, cable or DSL. I asked the tech people at Linksys were there
any drivers needed., they said no (which I still thought was wrong, because
how can you make any changes). I just checked the device list under system
and there is no evidence of a router. Would you run the setup as DSL and
then make the changes? Or am I totally missing the point as to where this
info should show up?

Thanks

Thanks for the help...finally figured out exactly what you said.. that it
was the internal settings on the router accessed via the direct http comand
that let me set stuff. Thanks, got it working hardwired and the laptop
working wireless...now to get the other 2 comunicating wireless and I'll be
ready to roll. PLus I'll know what to do once the cable modem connection is
avaliable
