Need Help wih Setting up Outlook 2003 (two questions)

Hello there,

I had an older PC with Outlook 98. It died. All data was transferred off
of it into an external drive

In the meantime, I bought a new laptop, with XPHome, which came with a trial
version of Outlook 2003. I have begun to use it for email. (Contacts,
Calendar, etc is still blank). The trial period is just about up, so I
purchased the Student version of Office 2003 from Costco (cheaper than buying
online from MS).

1. How do I load the new Office software? (i.e. install over it, or remove
the trial first and then install?) Either way, what will happen to the
emails I have received/sent during the trial period?

2. How do I get ALL my Outlook 98 info (i.e. Inbox, Contacts, Caledar,
Tast, Notes, etc.) currently housed in an external drive to import properly
into my laptop with with Outlook 2003? (the external drive is connected via
firewire, so I just need the step by step, how to identify the files and how
to import them)

Thanking you in advance for your help

Hi Russ,

I was a good girl and followed all the instructions and still ended up with:
Three Personal Folders (one with the House icon) and two below, but all with
the same info
Two Archived Folders (below and with the same info)
Two Contacts: one titled "Contacts" and the other "Contacts in Personal
Folders" (they both have the same info)
Four Calendar: one titled "Calendar", two "Calendar in Personal Folder" )
and one Archived Calendar (empty). They are connected in a weird way; often
when checking one, another gets automatically checked too.

When creating a new email and hitting "To", it can't find the Contacts file.
In the drop down menu, there are four(!) and the info is only in the second
one down. How to I get it to default to the correct Contacts and eliminate
the rest?

When going to the Control Panel, Mail, Data Files, there are (only) two
Personal Folders Files listed (one has "mail delivery", etc comment) and
(only) one Archive Folder.

What to do???????????

Even though I uninstalled and reinstalled, Outlook still remembered ALL my
profile detail and would just keep multiplying. I ended up copying my old
pst file from the old computer into the default location in the new computer
and exporting the interim "new mail" only from the new computer to Outlook
Express and back into Outlook in order to get all the email merged. That
part worked, however, how can I clean up the extra file messes and get the
"To" in an email to go to the correct Contacts folder?

Thank you again Russ,

Amoreena

1. Copy the Outlook Data file (PST file) from your current installation and
put it someplace you will remember. Remove the trial version completely.
Install Office 2003.
2. Migrate the data from your earlier installation using the directions in
the Help files:

How did you actually connect your new installation to your old data file? It
sounds like you imported your old data file. You corrupted your profile.
You'll need to create a new profile then follow the instructions I posted
precisely to migrate your old data file.

An alternative is to create a new profile and let it continue to use the new
default PST file it creates. Then open your old data file and copy what you
want into the new one. That way you'll be using the new Outlook data file
format. Make sure at no point that you try to import your old file.
