Hi,
My laptop crashed, BSOD. End of story.
Hardwares fine, OS blown.

Two questions:
Q1: Can you load XP Home over itself and not
loose data files, outlook files, etc.?
If so, yahoo! and how do?

Q 2: I pulled the drive and have it running
via the usb port on another laptop. the drive
is fine. Is there a way to get outlook 2007's
calander file off it, and load it on this laptop?

thanks for any help.

Mike

ps: I'd really like to get all of
outlook's stuff off it, and also
the stuff saved in folders in
outlook and the newsgroup reader
that's part of outlook express.

If its only the operating system that crashed and if you have a XP retail CD
you can do a "repair" installation.
This saves your settings in all things and you would be up and running in no
time.....you would of course need to do all those lovely time consuming
updates all over again.

Q2....if you have Outlook 2007 on the system that you are hooked up to you
could import all of the necesary stuff to that Outlook2007

You should have backup copies of important data saved to removable
media. Apparently you don't, so you don't do anything except try to
make up for that critical error. At this point, you don't
troubleshoot anything, you don't try to fix anything, you don't try
to recover your data. What you do right now before doing anything
else is make a copy or clone of what you do have. Only after you
have a copy of whatever's there, then you can try to make up for not
having backup copies of your data.

Of course, that depends on how important your data is to you. If it
really isn't important, troubleshooting your stuff without making a
copy of it first and messing up things further won't really matter.

If your data does matter, you are really very lucky that you have
anything left to make a copy of.

Good luck.

BTW even after format-ing the hard drive files are retrievable so
don't chuck it away. :)

And you still don't know enough to have a copy of what you're
messing with.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the info. I have the cd that came with the laptop and
ran the install, and got to the repair console, but then it devolved into
a command line screen wherein i was clueless save to an ancient
dos mbr command I remembered.
Mike
and yeah, ouch on the updates. I didn't read the links yet, so
they probable will tell me what to do in the repair console.
thanks again

Hi Sandy,
thanks for the info vis a vis recovery software.
I'll look into it. But mostly the data is intact.
The drive seems fine to me.

Even the most casual PC user should know enough to make a copy of
what he is working on, copy and paste is the most fundamental part
of computing. That applies especially when you start trying to
troubleshoot something. Being able to make a copy of what you're
messing with is the extraordinary quality that separates working
with data from working with hardware. In my opinion, you should be
doing something else instead of wasting your time trying to use a
computer if you don't know that much.

You got to the "recovery" console the repair installation is further along
in the installation process...but only if you have a "full retail" XP not
some companies recovery version of XP.......so what specificaly do you have
for a XP CD???
Go back to the website I posted for the repair install and you will see

I'm trying to give you a clue (or someone in a similar situation but
who is capable of learning), so next time you won't be here whining
about trying to recover data you should have a copy of. You are
talking about trying to recover files from a hard drive you are
handling. If you end up with a nonfunctional hard drive, be
forewarned that there is no way to recover data from that without
major expense.

He John,
Sorry for last post, I was a little frustrated and miffed at the time and
didn't need to hear I was a moron.
You are absolutely right in your advise, and I ought not
to have replied the way I did.
Mike
