Need Help Configuring New DSL to Linksys 4 Port Wireless Router

None of the support pages are helping me.

If I hook the Sprint (Earthlink) DSL modem to my computer and set my nic
card to DHCP, then everything works fine. The instructions for the Linksys
router suggest that I should plug the DSL modem into the WAN port and
configure the Linksys router to PPPoE, but it doesn't work. I suspect it
might be a conflict between the DSL modem and the Linksys router both being
set as 192.168.1.1. I've experimented quite a bit, but I can't come up with
a configuration that seems to work.

Any ideas on proper physical configuration, router & nic card settings?

Thanks,
Ted

If DSL modem is using PPPoE then the IP address is not assigned to unit
until PPPoE connects succesfully.

So what is my proper configuration then?

Under PPPoE settings in the Linksys router, enter the user name and
password that your ISP had given you. This will replace the PPPoE
connection set up that you may have used in XP.

Modem --> Router ---(DHCP settings from router) ---> each PC.

Having just been through this when I switched to Earthlink......

If you have a static IP, you're going to have to switch the DSL modem from
router to bridge mode. There are instructions on the Earthlink website as
to how to do this....

Then you'll configure the Linksys router afterwards.

While reconfiguring the DSL modem, you will have to have the PC attached to
the DSL modem with no router in the middle.

Well, I finally got it working. I'll post how in case anyone else has the
same problem.

The Sprint DSL modem comes configured for one computer only. It will not
work when connected to a router without some modifications. Absolutely
nothing in the support sites that I could find indicated this, but the tech
support gentleman was very nice. He said he couldn't support my router
since I didn't buy it from Sprint, but he pointed me to 2 documents that
made it a snap.

He said that I had to set up the DSL modem as a brige. First he pointed me
to www.sprintdslhelp.com. Then you click on "Printable Walkthroughs" ending
up at this page:

http://csb.sprint.com/home/local/dslhelp/walkthroughs.html

Down at the bottom of the page is Advanced Modem and Router Configuration.

Click on the pdf for Bridging Instructions for the Zyxel 645M
and on the pdf for Linksys Wireless Router Dynamic IP

Just follow the instructions step by step and it works like a charm.

I hope this helps someone.
