Wireless Router Works but the one with wires does not

My linksys wireless router was hooked up and working with the internet in a
matter of minutes. I did not have to do anything; XP did it all for me.

However, I have a Linksys Router BEFSRU31 that will not let me get on the
internet. The router is so old that XP was not listed as one of the
operating systems on the box.

I am using Bellsouth's DSL modem. I have the latest firmware for my router.
Right now I am just trying to connect one pc to keep it simple, so I have
the wires hooked up right (modem to WAN with Cat5 cable, Cat5 cable from
router port to computer). The Local Area Connection icon pops up in the
systray saying that the connection is okay. But no pages will display when I
try to get on the internet. I have hit the reset button several times on
both the modem and the router.

The router does not show up anywhere in Device Manager. Is it supposed to?

Also, if I got a new current router would it set up easy and quickly like
the wireless one did?

Most wireless routers sold today for home networking come with 4 RJ45 ports
for wired connections along with the wireless capability, didn't yours? I
wouldn't bother buying a wired router. Your router will not show up in
device manager, only the network card.

When I connect my router, I get the local area connection icon to display,
but I get a popup saying "This connection has limited or no connectivity."
When I do a Repair on the connection it says the IP cannot be renewed. I
have already tried reseting the router and the modem, but I keep getting the
limited or no connectivity popup.

The only way I can get the internet to work is to go directly from the back
of the computer to the dsl modem with one cat5 cable. As soon as I connect
the router and connect the cables, the internet stops working.

Any suggestions?

I did not think about that NB. I am using the Dlink wireless router but
using the rj45 ports on the back of it instead. I don't know why the linksys
router would not work, but I dont care now. The dlink is working fine and
came right up as soon as I put in the right password from my bellsouth
account.

Go figure.

If you are not wireless and havent already try another RJ45 cable.

Sorry I let my dislexia get the best of me. What im asking is wether or not
your using the wireless connection. If your using a RJ45 cable. Id try
another cable.
