Need Help - Computer Hijacked by Adware

B

bd

My girlfriend has had her computer hooked up to broadband for about a
year without a firewall or AV software. Needless to say she has had a
problem with popups. She did have the McAffee Security Center, but
for whatever reason it didn't work at all.

I did a scan with nod32 and removed 210 viruses. I scanned with
NAV2004 and removed 23,000 adware files. The problem is that she'll
enter a web address and be redirected in the browser to adware.com. I
haven't been able to find the source.

I'm thinking of just wiping and restoring the computer and putting ZAP
and NAV2004 on it so this doesn't happen again. NAV 2004 seems to
have more robust anti-spy ware / adware definitions than Nod32 and is
easier for the average user to use if it comes across a virus.

Anything else I can do short of wiping the hard disk? I also ran
Ad-aware and cleaned out registry definitions, but something is still
there. After cleaning 210 viruses, I wonder if I'll ever get it
all....

TIA

See my web site for the Escan av Toolkit Utility. It will probably
find more stuff. Also see the link to Spybot.
