Need help, can't delete unwanted folders

Hi! :)

Earlier this year, I got a USB connected 250G external hard drive to use
only for storage so my laptop's main HD would have only program files on it.
The problem is that unlike it would with a 3.5" floppy or my 128M USB flash
drive, both of which are essentially the same thing just with less storage
space, my laptop has put two folders on it that do not need to be there any
more than similar folders need to be on a 3.5" floppy or my 128M USB flash
drive.

They are "Recycled" and "System Volume Information" Recycled always only
has one file in it named something like
S-1-5-21-117609710-113007714-1708537768-1003 (no extension) that is very
large, 2.31G at the time of this posting. That file deletes OK, but when I
try to delete the Recycled folder it's in, I get that "cannot delete access
is denied" message.

"System Volume Information" won't even let me see what size it is by right
clicking and selecting properties, trying to open the folder gets "is not
accessable, access is denied" and trying to delete it also gets that "cannot
delete access is denied" message. I am only able to tell it's a whopping 18G
by subtracting what highlighting the drive in My Computer says is the total
size of the EXHD from the 250M of space that it is supposed to be

Thanx in advance :)

Hi Cloudchaser,
The recycler is a "Recycle Bin" that every HDD gets unless you turn it off.
Highlight the folder inside the recycler and right click on it, then click
"properties".
You will see settings for it to set its size and to not move files to the
recycle bin (for that drive). You can turn this off by checking the box and
moving slider for size all the way to the left. *** But only do this if you
are certain you DO NOT want a recycle bin for this drive***

System Volume Info is a needed folder/file that has info on the actual HDD,
size, formatting, etc. It is needed!
Both of these folders are normally hidden system folders, so you must have
hidden files/folders turned off.

Good luck!

That's your system restore and more problems than it's worth, or so it
seems reading this group.

You can disable system restore and use ERUNT
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/
Much better and runs when restore won't.

Start | Run <type in> SYSDM.CPL <enter>
Turn it all off or just the drive -

Good enough.

Sorry, but that's not even close to being correct.

The System Volume Information is the hidden, protected operating
system folder in which WinXP's System Restore feature stores
information used to recover from errors.

To remove the "System Volume Information," simply turn off the
System Restore feature (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System
Tools > System Restore, System Restore Settings), and reboot. This will
delete all of your Restore Points.

Both of these folders are normally hidden system folders, so you must have
hidden files/folders turned off.

First of all, I do appreciate everyone's replies :)

Second, now I'm wondering why WinXP wants to create "sys inst info" and
"recycle" for my 250G external HD and not a 3.5" floppy or my 128M flash USB
as well as why it doesn't put the folders for "sys inst info" and "recycle"
for my 250G external HD on c:\ instead of the drive I got only for storage
