If you HD formatted FAT32 vice NTFS suggest you cheek with a friend for a
Win ME startup disk which provides "tools" and CD drivers.
Otherwise Help and Support provides instructions on creating a MS-DOS
startup disk.

In my opinion it is essential to have an XP installation CD. It is bootable
and has all the tools needed to partition, format, and install XP, and to
run the recovery console to do certain repairs. It takes the place of an
emergency startup disk.

You could make the six floppy boot startup disk set. They have limited
usefulness See this link:
How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks

You could also investigate a Bart's PE disk or the Ultimate Boot CD, based
on Bart's PE.

Unfortunately, your friend "set you up" with what is currently a pirated
copy of XP since you don't seem to have the COA, CD, or recovery partitions
for it. In other words, it is not licensed to you. Or, if it is licensed
to you, it's being pirated to others, whoever else he may have given that
sort of an installation to.
Get hold of your "friend" and tell him you need the proper media to be
able to restore/recover your computer to its original state. Otherwise,
when you need to, that will be it; you'll be dead in the water without an
operating system for your computer. I hope you dind't pay him much because
it sounds like the correct charge would have been $0.00.

Stuff happens to good people.
