Need advice on Office 2003 standard setup

I have a Vista Premium PC that came with Office 2007 trial that I
uninstalled. Installed Office 2003 standard. Also have XP Pro PC that
originally had Office 2003 installed. Have wired connection to internet thru
router on Vista and the XP Pro PC connected wirelessly to router. Can I have
Office 2003 (only have 1 license) on the Vista PC and be able to check email
from XP Pro desktop? Since I can't install Office 2003 on both PC's, how do
I configure the Vista PC and XP PC to allow me to check email(if this is
possible)? If not possible, can I setup Outlook Express on XP? Do I need
IIS installed on XP PC? Would I be better off to purchase Office Standard
2007 on Vista PC and reinstall 2003 standard on XP? Please advise on best
way to set this up. I really would like to share email as well as files but
would be happy with just being able to access word/excel files on XP PC.
Right now I would be happy to know for sure what is possible. I did update
to Vista SP1 and XP SP3 and ended up uninstalling it and now can't get it
reinstalled, but that is another issue.

You can access data from both PC's but since one PC has no Office installed
I dont see how that would help with office data files.
Likewise you cannot share email, allthough you could set Outlook to leave a
copy on the server then set up Outlook Express on the XP PC, however that
wouldnt help with sent mail
You would need a second Office license to install Office on the XP pc, and
since Office 2003 has been replaced by Office 2007 you would probably have
to purchase 2007 for the XP pc

Thank you for the response. Was pretty much what I expected. I was just
reading about the Open Office Suite which seems to be free. I am not
familiar with it but it seems that it could be installed on the XP PC to make
at least some Word & Excel 2003 documents interchangeable although it still
would not help with email/calanders etc. I was wondering if you or anyone
else has had experience with using this Suite--how well it actually works?

Open Office is a fine suite for most users - however, if you use complex
documents (lots of graphics, page/section breaks, etc.) you may find some
compatibility problems in their Word equivalent.

Likewise with Excel documents that you open in OO.

Also, OO does not have an Outlook equivalent.
