Need a replacement for PC Mag's FolderMon

I had PC Magazine's FolderMon installed. It would let you monitor a folder to see what was happening with its files. However, I had to get rid of it because of a bug.

I found the Search in Windows XP has some nasty bugs and sometimes won't find a file that exists. So I hunted and asked around and found Agent Ransack is pretty good. Except it would crash when I right-clicked on a file and hovered the mouse over the Send To entry in the context menu. Turns out it had nothing to do with that particular submenu but in how FolderMon handles its namespace extension and popup context submenu. After several e-mails with Ransack's programmer, its crash was the fault of FolderMon. In fact, I could open IE, enter C:\ in the address bar (to have IE act like Explorer), and right-clicking and hovering over the Send To entry (to popup its submenu) would also cause the crash. Bye bye FolderMon.

So now I'm looking for a freebie replacement. SysInternals has their FileMon but it monitors all file activity rather than just the activity on a particular folder or file. Got any suggestions for a replacement to PC Mag's FolderMon?

That article refers to a content search. When searching you can opt to look for files by their name (with or without wildcards), by some content (i.e., a string within the file), or both. I can make the Search fail when just searching by filename. No string is specified in the search; i.e., there is no content specified to find. Search doesn't have to interrogate the contents of a file because I never specified anything within the file to look for, so the fact that Search can only interrogate a limited set of filetypes is irrelevant. I was only doing searches by filename - and it failed too many times.

I wasn't trying to find a file that had a particular string of text within it. I just wanted to find the file! I knew its filename but needed to know *where* it was. My post really isn't to hash over my prior post regarding the bugs in Windows XP's search (which are not present in the Windows 2000 Search). It was to ask for suggestions on a different folder/file monitoring utility since FolderMon has been discovered to have a major bug that can cause Ransack, IE, and possibly other programs to crash when opening a popup submenu from the popup context menu.
