Need a new printer

I recently had Windows XP installed on my computer and came to find out that
my Compaq A900 all-in-one printer (made by Lexmark) is not XP compatible.
Previously, I was running Windows 98. I went to the Compaq website and the
most up to date drivers were for Windows ME.

I've been looking at HP printers (the HP PSC 2175 in particular) but I am
curious to know what opinions are of other brands such as Epson, Canon, and
Brother. I was not particularly in love with the A900, so I don't think I
want to get another Lexmark.

One other question: My A900 also had fax capabilities. The HP 2175 does
not have a fax. If I scan a document in, can I then convert it for fax via
my modem? If so, then fax capability is not so important for the new
printer.

Thanks for any advice.

To scan and then fax from a PC modem you need a Fax modem (most recent modems
have this capability) and fax software, which is bundled in XP, at least the
Pro version. (I am not sure about the home version.)

You might also take a look at the PSC 2210. OfficeMax has refurbished units on
sale this week for $119 after $30 rebate. The 2210 is like a 2175 except that
it includes the Fax capability, in addition to the print, scan, copy and card
slot capability of the PSC 2175.

I've always been hesitant to buy refurbs. Is the warranty the same?

If you can live without the fax capability by using a fax-modem you might
want to check the Canon MultiPass F-60. It is available at Staples this week
for $199.99 less a $100 MIR. Using a Staples $50 off $200 coupon brings this
printer-scanner-copier down to about $60 (including tax) after the rebate is
paid.

The F-60 uses 4 ink tanks that are reasonably easy to refill. Plus the Canon
is not as prone to head clogging as is Epson and some others.

Check www.fatwallet.com in the "Hot Deals" forum for a thread about this
deal. Within the thread is a link to a pdf file of the coupon mentioned
previously. Print the coupon and take it to Staples.

The ad said it had a one year warranty, which is the same as a new unit. I
would verify the warranty with the store.
