need a know it all, please, for tracking a users log in time

can I track users log in/out times and how do I do it?
Paid a tech $$$$ and he couldn't do it.
 
Why not have a login script append the date and time to a text file.
 
You could also use auditing as part of group policy, but if you want to
track over a long period you'll need to increase the size of the audit
logfile.
Is this in a workgroup to keep track of one local machine, or do you want
to set up auditing for a domain, if so , are you running active directory ?
