Navigation Changed, Header and Footer Mysteriously Replaced

G

Guest

I am designing/developing my first Microsoft FrontPage 2000 website. I am
using version 4.0.2.2717.
My website is not live yet. I wanted to publish it on Saturday. It is in
development on my laptop. I made backups of it yesterday before I made
several hours of changes. The changes I made were only to text within the
body of the website. I did not change any header, navigation or footer
information. I closed FrontPage down as usual around 5:30PM. Later on that
evening, around 9:00PM I opened up FrontPage again and my left hand
navigation lost all it's buttons and just had text links, the header was
still present but instead of my customized one it had a generic template
header? The footer is empty.
This is the second time this has happened. Am I doing something wrong? How
do I get my previous header, footer and navigation back? Is there a file that
has been corrupted? Can it be fixed? How do I prevent this from happening in
the future? Thanks for any help you can provide!

How are you opening your web/site?

Rob:
From Microsoft FrontPage I go to the Menu bar and select "File". From the
Fly Down I select "Open Web...". A popup window comes up. It defaults to the
location of my website so I select "Open". It always takes me to
new_page_1.htm so from the views menu I click on the navigation link. I then
find my home page and double click on that.

1) Make sure your home page has the same file name as required by your host
2) When using shared borders or include pages you must have valid html or FP can not save (embed) the shared borders/ include pages
Shared borders and Include Pages are design time tools w/ the content (inside the <BODY> tags) of the Shared Border or Include page
"embedded" or included as html in your pages when you save any of the file(s) using them (or save the borders / include pages
themselves)
FP converts your page(s) to a series of tables to include the Shared borders, (which are really just a special case of Include
pages)
But FP can not build those tables if either your shared border page content or main page content has illegal html or broken tag
pairs
- usually due to missing </body></html> tags, or unmatched table / cell tags (unclosed table / cell tags), or some other unclosed
html block element

If you can see them using File Preview in Browser they will publish in as part of your pages

If you can't see them using File Preview in Browser, it's because FP can not build the included content tables, so you need to
validate and correct your broken html

PS
You can always see your files in View Folder List

Point #1 may be a good point but I haven't published my website yet. (It is
not live yet.) It is still on my laptop in development. So that is not the
issue.
Point #2 - maybe that is the problem? If my html code becomes corrupted are
you saying that this will cause FrontPages Shared Borders (my header, footer
and navigation) to cease working? If so that is a pretty sever penalty!
I'm not sure about what a lot of your post explains, but if I fixed the bad
HTML then the "missing" header/footer/navigation would mysteriously reappear
as mysteriously as it disappeard?
I don't code in HTML I use the NORMAL tab to do 99.9% of my work. So if a
problem occured it must be something FP did, but even if that is the case how
could I quickly find the offending HTML? I have over 70 pages of content!

Check the pages by right clicking in code view and selecting Reformat Html
then try running Tools browser compatibility

Stefan:
Thanks for your patience with me on this. I went into HTML view "code view"
then right clicked anywhere within the code. The closest thing I could see
to a "Reformat Html" was a pop up window option called "Tag Properties". I'm
not sure what a Tools browser compatibility is. I'll need more explanation
because I couldn't find anything under the "Tools" menu that resembled this.
Maybe we are using different versions of FrontPage? Remember, I have 2000.
Thanks again for your help.
