NAV 2002 - "Error in the script"

Hia.

We have a 'spare' pc which the kids use to access the internet. It has no
anti-virus protection and inevitably has, over time, become badly infected.

Yesterday evening I installed Ad-aware, Spybot and Spy Sweeper (as I already
have on my own pc) and removed 270 viruses.

I fear I haven't removed all the damage they've done! (For example, strange
mouse behaviour persists, where intermittently the mouse doesn't function
for 10, maybe 15, seconds.)

I've also installed NAV 2002. And I have a problem. I can't complete the NAV
registration process so I can't use it. I've tried reinstalling NAV; no
difference.

Towards the end of the installation process I get the pop-up:
________________________________________________
Installer information

Error 1406. Could not write value to key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software. Verify that you have
sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
Abort - Retry - Ignore
___________________________________________

Clicking 'Retry' fails to get past the pop-up.

If 'Ignore' is clicked, a pop-up containing the slightly different

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft

is displayed.

Again, 'Retry' doesn't get past this pop-up either.

If 'Ignore' is clicked, I'm told that I've successfully installed NAV. (Oh
yeah!)

On launching NAV (bear in mind that this is the first time, so I have to
complete the registration process) the following pop-up is displayed:

Norton AntiVirus was unable to start Email Protection

Then I get an 'Internet Explorer Script Error' informing me that:

'An error has occured in the script on this page'

and offering the further information:

Line: 11.
Char: 2.
Error: Permission denied.
Code: 0.
URL: RES://C:\PROGRAM%20FILES\NORTON%20ANTIVIRUS\CFGWIZ.EXE/Welcome.htm

At the bottom of the pop-up it asks: 'Do you want to continue running
scripts on this page?'

Then I do either of two things:

If I click 'Yes' I'm returned to the splash page of the Information Wizard
and can click the only button displayed - 'Next'. Having clicked 'Next' I
can see that the next NAV page (Registration) appears. However, over the top
of it another pop-up appears, differing from the earlier pop-up only in
'Line' (it's now '96') and the final file reference in the url (it's now
'CfgWizRoadmap.htm').

If I click 'Yes' the page changes to the 'Registration' page but the buttons
(Cancel, Back, Next) don't function. Full stop.

Or:

If I click 'No' I'm returned to the Information Wizard and can click the
only button displayed - 'Next'. The next page arrives with the buttons
(Cancel, Back and Next) not functioning (presumably because I'd just said
that I didn't want to continue running scripts?).

Also:

I have right-clicked and selected 'Scan with Norton AntiVirus'. It then
displays the correct 'Scan' window, performs a very brief scan (of 91
files!) and tells me it's finished.

So that's my problem; NAV won't work!

Any help welcomed.

Download AVG and have it fix or delete all it finds, then download the NAV
remove tool from Norton's and have it remove all of Norton's. then manually
delete Symantec and Norton folders from Program files folder and the program
files/common files folders. Then try to reinstall NAV you may have to repeat
the process several times before it will work. If you have problems or more
questions post again, I check this group every day or so.

After leaving an unprotected and virus ridden computer connected to the
net, you can't expect anything to work properly except maybe the
spambots it undoubtedly has had running for who knows how long. The
general view at this point is that "flatten and rebuild" is the way to
go. This won't guarantee that the Norton AV problems you are
experiencing will go away, but that mouse lag is often associated with
mass-mailers like worms or spambots.

Right; progress (I think), but still a problem.

Downloaded AVG and deleted the single Trojan it found.

Downloaded Norton's remove tool and used it to remove NAV thoroughly.

Manually deleted (from 'Programme files') Symantec and Norton; and (from
'Common files') Symanec Shared.

Reinstalled NAV (this time 2003, rather than 2002, because I happened to
come across the disk!)

During installation, same problem as previously on installation:

Then something different!

When the pc restarts, as it has to, during restart the pop-up:
_________________________________________________________________

Settings alert

Some Symantec product settings have been changed by an unauthorised program.
This can indicate that an attacker or a virus is attempting to disable your
protection.

To avoid problems, settings will be reverted to the previous configuration
and your system will be restarted. Click OK to continue.
_________________________________________________________________

So I click 'OK' and then get the pop-up:
_________________________________________________________________

Registry Error

Cannot import c:\Programme Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ ccReg.dat:
Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.

OK
_________________________________________________________________

So I click 'OK', the pc restarts and the loop repeats itself! This goes on
indefinately. (I've discovered that I can break the loop by removing VAV.)

I've looked in the Symantec Shared folder and there isn't a file named
'ccReg.dat'.

Also, I noticed Roger's post that:
mouse lag is often associated with
mass-mailers like worms or spambots.

The mouse lag is still present. Is it / Could it be relevant to the NAV
problem?

Am I going forwards or backwards?

Thanks and regards.

Right; progress (I think), but still a problem.
Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error.

Have you tried running scandisk, to see if there is any file system corruption?

It looks like you did everything right but it didn't work. I've seen this
once before and unfortunately the only way to fix is to format and
reinstall. I know it is not the best option but now it would seem the only
one. :(

Fair enough; that'll teach me. (Will it really?)
Last resorts : (you have probably tried by now :)
1. Uninstall your symantec product and live update in Add
remove.
2. Look for this File: "Catalog.LiveSubscribe"
a. Win Xp/2k users,
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Symantec\LiveSubscribe, and delete it.

REGEDIT :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\SharedDefs

Press Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
Exit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

start Windows Explorer.
Navigate to and select the
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs folder.
Press Delete, and then click Yes to confirm.

Now this is progress!

I followed the instructions (as far as I could) in the Symantec support
document linked below.

The process involved reinstalling Windows Script 5.6 - which I successfully
did. (And I know it fixed a problem because web pages which last night
Explorer wouldn't display properly - and which was going to be my next
challenge - are now displaying!)

So having got that sorted, all that was left was for me was to, as the
support document instructed, 'Add permissions to the Norton AntiVirus
registry keys'.

Almost there, I thought.

So I expanded the section where I was to read how to do it and what did I
find? ...pause... Instructions for 2000. And XP. But not 98!

So that's my next objective - finding out how to change the security
permissions for Windows 98. (I've tried, unsuccessfully, to find another
Symantec support document.)

Regards to Tony and everyone else who's given me their time; can anyone help
me just a little bit more?
