Names of registry files

Under Windows95, 98 etc, I believe the registry files were called USER.DAT
and SYSTEM.DAT. What are they called in XP?

I'm not intending to do anything with them. If I wanted to edit them I'd use
Regedit and if I wanted to back them up I'd use the Backup tool (or a 3rd
party tool) but I do need to know what they are called and I can't find
anything in the newsgroups or on a Google search.

Thanks for the articles & book recommendation. I have also found the answer
to my original question: In XP, the registry files are held in
Windows\System32\Config or the equivelant place if Windows is in a
non-standard location. They have no extension and are called DEFAULT, SAM,
SECURITY, SOFTWARE and SYSTEM. USERDIFF may also be a registry file.

They are the files in Windows\system32\config (the ones without an
extension are the ones in use), plus the individual user files that are
in each user's
C:\Documents and Settings\username
The ntuser.dat and related bak, log, tmp etc
