#Name? error when opening file

I'm having a problem opening an excel file with links to other workbooks (which I don't have).

When I first receive the file, I can open it, say no to updating the links, and work with the file using the last #s updated.

After several months, when I open the file, I can see the last #s updated when the prompt to update links appears. As soon as I click to not update, all links change to a #Name? error.

What could be causing the problem? Is there a way to get back to the last numbers updated?

Did you just upgrade to xl2002 (or xl2003) from xl2k or earlier?

If yes:

xl2002+ likes to recalculate any workbooks that were created in previous
versions.
