Dr. Indera

hello,

i was reviewing the specs for this software and on this page
http://www.sonic.com/products/mydvd/mydvd/whatsnew.asp <all the way at the
bottom> noticed that external dvd drive are only supported by the deluxe
suite version. am i understanding this correctly? i am doing to buy a dvd
external drive, so if i wanted to burn dvd's with this software, i would
have to purchase the most expensive version of it?

thank you.

Send Sonic an email and ask..... you probably don't want to spend the extra
$s if you can avoid it!

Dr. Indera

thanks cari,

i sent then an email, but didn't hear back from them, which is why i posted
the message here.

Hello,

II have the same problem with Sonic. I wrote them twice and they didn't
respond. I also called them and left them a message...Nothing.. are they
intereseted on selling their products?

hello,

either they are swamped with messages and are short staffed or they don't
care.
neither is very good.

i don't want to call because that doesn't preserve my rights under the law.
if i have it in writing that i don't need to buy the most expensive version
and it doesn't work, by law they have to give me all of my money back, no
questions asked, even if they answered my question incorrectly.

many merchants charge a restocking fee on software and other computer
related items.

They obviously don't care. Here is my experience with Sony DVD and the
software which came along with it for capturing, editing and authoring (2
hour, 4.7 GB) DVD

In spite of having on my computer,

1) ATI’s Radeon 8500 Video Card and the associated MMC software for
capture in DVD compatible mpeg format

2) Sony DVD along with Sonic’s Record Now 4.0, My DVD 5, Vegas 4.0 and

3) Nero’s Vision Express 2.0

I have not been able to get the 6 episodes (each of roughly 20 minutes) of
HBO’s Sex & City into a DVD because each software has its own limitations.

Nero: I have been able to capture in mpeg-2 format on the ATI’s MMC and Nero’s
Vision Express 2 and even clip the commercials from the total duration of
each episode of about 30 minutes. But after clipping, I do not find any menu
for saving the clipped video. When I use the save button there, it saves the
whole 30 minutes episode without all the cuts made by me.

I have earlier made VCDs using ATI’s MMC or VirtualDub to capture video in
AVI format and convert it to mpeg format using Tsunami mpeg Encoder. But
TMPEG refuses to open an mpeg format file so I cannot edit files saved in
mpeg format with VirtualDub and TMPEG.

The Sonic MYDVD 5 has been registered but when I open an mpeg file captured
with MYDVD, Vega 4.0 which came along with Sony’s DVD, I get an error
message saying I need to register the mpeg encoding add-on software. When I
try to register, the response says, my registration number is not in the
database.

It also asked me to go and get a (12 MB) newer version of Record Now. I
promptly went on the Internet but downloading stopped after some 34 kB.

Because I am in India, there is no easy way of getting on the phone to Sony
and asking them why they do not include all the software compatible with
each other in their DVD pack and provide a clear instruction manual or Help
file to make a DVD.

I wonder how many buyers of Sony DVDs are able to make DVDs using all the
three components: capture, edit and author. Of course, Sony don't care two
hoots for their customers in India where I reside.

hello p jayant,

it sounds like you are having a ruff go of it.
i'm in the us and support here isn't much better.

after reading several reviews on nero and mydvd, it seems that they each
have some features that the other one doesn't, so i figured that since they
don't cost an arm and a leg, it was worth it to investigate a little further
to see if i should buy mydvd, but apparently they don't want my money. the
other option that i can think to try is ulead's burn.now
http://www.ulead.com/bn/runme.htm i was on their site a week or so ago and
filled out a form for their sample cd of trial versions of all of their
software. i was surprised when it arrived in the mail today. i figured it
would take at least a month. i was impressed. after looking at the screen
shots http://www.ulead.com/bn/screen.htm it remind me of nero.

i hope you can find a solution for your problem.

I find Nero's Vision Express 2 satisfactory for doing the capture but I have
not been able to clip the commercials out and have a clean episode of a
movie or say 6 twenty minute (after clipping) episodes of a serial. So the
editing functionality of Vision Express is not satisfactory.
Sonic's Vegas which came along with the DVD and MY DVD software is supposed
to be for editing but it does not let me even open an mpeg file and asks me
to get an add-on for being able to open captured mpeg files for editing. I
don't know why they did not give a working version of Vegas along with the
DVD. It looks like a gold-digging operation to give half-baked software and
ask users to pay for upgrades every year or two.
I am looking for a freeware package which will let me edit the captured
video mpeg files.
Until then my DVD Writer remains idle.
