mydoom virus? unable to download messages.

Hey guys, I was over getting help on the xp general forums but finally
decided to come over here since they've helped me as much as they could.

When I try to send receive in outlook, I get this alert from NAV 2003

http://www.wowcentral.com/random/nav_alert.gif

I do not have mydoom on my system, I've triple checked with virus scanning,
searching for the usual suspect files, and even using the mydoom removal
tool from symantecs security response site.

As a temporary solution, they pointed me to this mail washer program which
logs onto your pop server and allows you to delete or bounce e-mails back
before you even download them. After loading it up and deleting all the spam
that had attachments, etc, I was able to download messages from outlook just
fine. However, this mydoom worm is pretty wild because I get a lot of them
in my e-mail and it seems like whenever I get one now, it doesn't allow me
to download messages anymore.

This has basically been happening since like, last thursday I think.

Anyone interested in seeing the original thread, the subject is "I do but
don't have a virus, what's up?" on microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

Basically, I just want to go back to be able to download e-mails
(attachments and all etc) as I had been doing as long as I remember, without
having to use mail washer to delete these "problem" e-mails which then
enables me to actually download my messages.

Thanks in advance.

Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express? (Outlook doesn't use that folder
path to the best of my knowledge.)

In any event, turn off the AV's mail scanner option and delete the messages
after they are downloaded (it's pretty easy to tell what's spam and viruses)
without scanning them. Leave the autoprotect feature enabled.

Also - visit windowsupdate and make sure you have all the patches installed.
Leave the attachment blocking feature in OE6 and OL2000/2002/2003 fully
enabled for greatest protection.

Outlook 2002, and I know it's outlook that's causing it because as soon as I
try to send receive with outlook, it will give me that error immediately.
