I'm using Word 2000. I cannot delete the bracket sign. I don't know how it
got into the document.. I've been sharing a different file with someone who
is using Word 2003 and may have copied one of his styles in my document.

Barbara:

Do you mean you're seeing unexpected pairs of square, gray brackets in your
document? Those may be bookmarks. The bookmarks are normally hidden. You can
show or hide them using Tools > Options > View and checking or clearing the
Bookmarks check box.

If you really want the bookmarks GONE, not just hidden, you can click Insert
Bookmarks, then select the offensive bookmark and click Delete. Be careful,
though, Word uses bookmarks for TOC and x-ref purposes. So don't blow up
anything important!
