My Word 2000 Menu bars are gone & no CD-ROM-what can I do?

When I open Word 2000, after the beginning logo, I get the first blank white
page
with only a single red bar @ the top with "Document 1" and the 3 control
boxes @ the top-left . . .but the Menu Headings are not appearing!
The HELP and Troubleshooting options aren't useful because they tell me to
use the TOOLS function - which doesn't show anymore.
I don't have an original CD-ROM -a neighbor gave me this system when he
moved. I have been using Notepad temporarily, but I can't do advanced editing
and Search & Replace functions. I have done a SCAN for files & folders, but
it reported no problems found. I'm wondering if something happened on an
earlier Defrag - or a Registry problem is involved. There may be a simple
operator solution,
but it's not clear to me right now. Thanks for any help.
