Over the past several months our IE6 performance has degraded from
tolerablew to crappy.

First, we lost the ability to search from within the location bar. If we
type in a subject, we get a "Page Cannot Be Found" error. So we search from
the search button.

Now, when we are at certain pages, many linked pages will do the same thing
from within a site.

Adaware, Spybot, and Symantec are all up to date and all three say we're
clean as a whistle!

Should I reinstall IE6? CAN that be done? Would it help?

Sure it can be done.
Check this link and read up on it.

However it sounds to me like your having timeout issues.
What kind of connection to the internet do you have?
Dial up, cable, DSL ???

This makes a big difference in methods to deal with it.

I used to have issues with a dial up connection and
timeouts, I called my telephone co and had them check the
line, turns out I had a lousy connection, with lots of
static, they needed to replace some phone cables, and I
needed to tweak some settings. but it was resolved.

Go ahead, it's your PC. Personally, I'd rather find the cause of the
problem, correct it and prevent it from happening again, but then I like
using my brain and actually learn something once in a while.

My wife can't either sometimes but no fault of the computer ;)

Have you cleaned up temporary internet files and cookies? I would try
re-installing IE6sp1, it certainly wouldn't harm anything. I've had to
do that before to fix IE when it gets munged up too bad.
