my toolbar is beating me

Why have the drop downs under my "History" "Search" and "Favorites" buttons dissapeared only to be replaced by an irritating box on the left side of my screen? I don't know what changed, or, more importantly, how to change back. Anybody know

click the x or it it lycos side search. spyware.
safer-networking.org update ,scan on easy and remove
spywares/hijackers.
