My text is highlited and I hit backspace, why no deletion?

My word is being gay everytime i highlite my text such as with my mouse not
highlite like with the highlite tool, I can't delete the text by simply
pressing backspace. I have to hit delete. If i try to typeover it it just
starts right before the highlited section. Why???

In Tools > Options > Edit, check the box for "Typing replaces
selection".
