My SSL/TLS is bad?

Paul H

When I start my Vista Windows Mail, it has recently has been warning me:

"Avast! has detected a secure connection from your mail program (process
WinMail.exe) to SMTP server 204.127.217.16 (att.net).

This type of connection cannot be checked for viruses. Please disable
SSL/TLS in your mail client so that the Mail Scanner can scan your mail.
The mail scanner will provide the SSL/TLS security itself."

Recently it has changed to :

"The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that could
not be verified. The certificate's CN name does not match the passed value.
Do you want to continue using this server?"

In both cases, when I click "Yes" my mail runs with no apparent problems.

Does anyone know what's going on, and how I can correct the issue? TIA,
Paul

Avast should not be interacting with Windows Mail.
Your Avast antivirus was probably installed with its default install option,
which installs an email scanning module. Just disabling its email scanning
is not a sufficient remedy. Uninstall Avast, then reinstall, but select 'custom'
install, which then allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email
scanning module.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

If you continue getting error messages after making that change,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Gary,

I cannot send or attach the pictures - I've tried every way I know. I could
make this "rich text" and maybe imbed the pictures if you want me to.

The text is as I copied, below.

Avast has blocked an email every once in a while that did have a virus.

My same Avast is installed the exact same way on all of my laptops - XP,
Vista, and W7 (Yes, I'm using Windows Mail there also).

Notice that the Avast warning is gone now, replaced with the newer one.

Thanks,
Paul

Gary,
What about the "The server you are connected to is using a security
certificate that could not be verified."

If you don't get an error message that contains the server name
and port number, do the following:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers, and
copy down the name of the incoming (POP3) server and the name of
the outgoing (SMTP) server. Then go to the Advanced tab and copy
down which port numbers the two servers are using, and whether
either one has its SSL box checked. Post that information in your reply.
