Get a pair of headphones. Plug them into a stereo receiver, CD player,
cassette player, portable radio, or other sound source. Play or
listening to something to ensure the headphones work okay. Then unplug
your speakers and plug in the headphones. Do you hear anything in the
headphones? If you hear sound in the headphones, your speakers are
broke, they aren't powered up, or you have their sound control set to
minimum (depends on what controls are provided on the speakers). If you
don't hear sound in the headphones, then something is wrong in your
computer hardware or software, like you turned on the mute control, you
didn't install the sound card drivers, you didn't install the
motherboard chipset drivers to support the onboard sound controller, you
didn't power on the computer, whatever.

First determine if you actually have any sound output by using a pair of
working headphones to test.
