Sorry for the question as it may have already been answered but here goes:
User1 browses to a file server for a file using IE. Path is
http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/path/filename.ext. The path and file name end up being
huge, massive in fact, so much that when the entry is created in the MRD, XP
file system has no idea how to handle it. Can't delete it, rename it or
otherwise.
file name appears as follows: http--xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/path/filename
User2 follows the exact same process but only ends up with the file name.
Any assistance would be great.

Do you mean the file name is too large to handle ?

First, I believe Windows XP can handle more than 255 characters for a file
name.
Second, characters like "/" cannot be used for a file name. Are you sure it
is not a http shortcut reference again to the file on the file server ( just
as you save favorites in IE) ?

Why can't the file be renamed after saving a copy of it from HDD.

Alternate and effective method -> If intranet, use file:// instead of
http:// to access the file.

Indeed, file name too big (as reported by OS)
Correct on most accounts Jonybrv, although this is an automattically created
file placed in the My Recent Documents folder.

Let me get this cleared.

if you are able to manually access the file using Internet Explorer, but not
from My Recent Documents, then it is something due to the file name confusion
as you suspect.

Let wait to see what experts here think.

Cleared.
Just to add another little twist, when the entry is first created after
opening the doco, the entry appears as filename.ext on xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx . When
the user logs out, it appears to 'expand' the entry to its full name. Until
that point, everything looks fine.

Why don;t u clear My Documents once and allow it to recreate ?

There is also a Policy/registry setting to make sure My Recent documetns
history is cleared everytime you logoff
