My primary DC went down on Friday and the secondary DC did not kick in?

Hello,

I just recently upgraded to AD, and never had my primary DC go down; but
last friday, my primary DC went down, but it seems that my secondary DC did
not kick in? Some of my users was complaining that they could not log into
the domain. Shouldn't the secondary by default be able to take the place of
the primary if it goes down?

Was you second DC also a Global Catalog and DNS server ? Were your clients
pointing their DNS settings also to second DNS server ?

No my second DC is not a Global Catalog Server, but it is a DNS server. I
also did some more research, and that might be the issue! My second DC is
not a Global Catalog server.
Correct me if I'm wrong!

GC is needed for logon process, so this is probably your issue. Assign your
second DC as global catalog server.

Also,
Does it matter if I'm still in mixed mode? I've read that Global Catalog
only applies to Native modes. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Thanks!

Part of global catalog role is used only when in native mode (universal
groups), but global catalog is still neded and used even when in mixed mode.

Hi,

I hav setup the Primary DC. Also i make the additional DC also.

I make the Aditinonal DC as Global Catelog Sever.

In PDC DHCP scoe i put the Addition DC IP as DNS sever.

My Additionl DC Primary DNS has set up to the PDC.

Now if my PDC down and does my users can login the domain using my Additional DC. But i can see there are no Profle or Home Folder in my Additional DC what i can see in PDC.

do i have copy those manually to the Additional DC. Also when i look a the Additional DC Active Directory Users and Computres i can see the all the objects what i can see in the PDC. But i can not the user profile path and home folder paths. So how can my uses get there profiles etc?

Please help me?

Hi

I have exactly this issue with wanting profiles available when the dc with them on is not

i have been told that DFS can do this but the easiest solution is setup a fileserver store the porfiles on that then point the profile attribute of the user object to that files server so then itdont matter if either dc is down

I have a thread called roaming profile redundacy in this group I think

hi,

I do not want to keep another server to keep the profiles and home folder data.

What i want to basically do is if PDC got down form other DC it need to load the profiles and need to connected to the home folders etc.

Can not we automate this replicatre thing beetween servers.

Atlest is tehre any way when we setting users in PDC, to set if PDC down look at the profile home etc form other DC in the network.

i mean the user properties profile tab?

Even then it is ok to manually copy the the data to other DC.
