If I click on Start then on My Pictures or My Music on the Start Menu, I
now get the Search dialog box instead with either the My Pictures or My Music
in the "Look in:" box.

Click Start and rightclick My Music then click Properties. Now check
the "Location" where it is pointing to - is it the correct file/directory
where your music files are located?
If not, try a System Restore to before the problem started.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
you can go back up to 90 days if your Restore is enabled.

You could try to run a search for the files your trying to locate
before the restore, this may allow you to find the files & why they
moved from the expected location.
