My PC suffers from Insomnia !

Martin

Can anyone help with this unusual problem - is it an XP
issue or hardware issue.............

My PC has developed Insomnia! After a normal shut down at
the end of the day, the PC will reboot itself
automatically several hours later in the early hours of
the morning, e.g. shut down at 11.00 pm, no power lights
on or signs of life, PC automatically powered up at 4.30
am.

PC has done this several times. It sometimes does it
during the day as well. I have a power surge protection
devise fitted, so do not think it is a surge causing the
problem.

Thanks

Martin

PS I am assuming we do not have a ghost in the house!

Check your BIOS settings, there should be an option to automatically start
the computer at some aforeset time..

Check BIOS for Wake-On events. The Alarm option can also be set to turn
on the computer at a specific time.

Also check if you have any events defined in Task Scheduler which are
configure to wake the computer from sleep.

Thanks for the reply.

I do not have any tasks scheduled which would require the
PC to power up at these (random)times.

Could you please advise me how to check my BIOS settings.

Martin

When you first turn on your computer, there should be a message such as
press DEL to enter setup or seomthign similar. You can try just
pressing the DEL key, F1, and F2 rapidly to see if it enters the BIOS.
Then navigate and find these options.

You provided absolutely no information regarding your hardware. I'm not
going to guess what hardware you have. The manual for your motherboard
or computer should explain how to enter BIOS and what settings are
available, or look it up online at the manufacturer's web site since
most provide downloadable or online copies of their manuals.

Some BIOSes have an option as to what to do when power gets restored
(from an outage). Perhaps you have yours configured the power up when
power is restored. If so, and if you don't want the computer to go on
after an outage, then configure this BIOS setting, if available, to keep
the computer off when power is restored.
