My PC slowed down when I installed windows search on my XP

I installed a windows search on my XP. Version 4.0 I think. Now a process,
seachindexer.exe, has take over. The disk activity never stops and
everything else is very slow. I noticed its base priority is normal.
Shouldn't that be lower.

Also, do you know if it searches only files that it has a filter for. I like
to search all text files when I search.

Thanks in advance

I think you'll be much happier if you uninstall that dog and use Agent
Ransack instead:

OMG, thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have been looking for a decent
search program for Vista (I can't stand the OEM), and this is it! I missed
the ability to right-click on a folder and do a fast and easy search without
all that indexing.

On the original post, I uninstalled 4.0 on my XP box, and went back to
standard OEM search. I never really disliked it, just thought I'd try 4.0
and see how it worked. Big mistake. Reminded me of Vista's POS search. Also,
the indexing service can be disabled with (to me anyhow) no adverse effects.

I can't find in Add Remove Programs anything that looks like a Windows
Search item. So I looked in Window Components and there is an Indexing
Service but it is not checked.

What am I missing?

Also, I really search very little so if the original Windows Search will
search all text files, even if it takes a while, I could stick with that.
Can it do that?

Thanks

You need to make sure the box for Show Updates is checked when you are
in Add or Remove Programs.

Sure, you can stick with it. But Agent Ransack is faster and doesn't
cause excessive hard drive activity. If your PC's problems began at the
moment you installed Windows Search, then uninstalling it will be the
fastest and easiest method to solve your problem. What is probably
happening is a conflict -- perhaps with iTunes. You could spend a lot of
time determining what this conflict with Windows Search is, but since
Agent Ransack is better anyway, you might as well just uninstall Windows
Search.

This is from another group:
"First off, in Control Panel -> Folder Options, is "Show hidden files and
folders" selected in the Advanced settings box on the View page?

If it is and you still can't find the $NtUninstallKB940157$ folder, let's
see if
the following helps.

Go to Start and click on Run.
In the Run box, enter regedit.exe.
In the Registry editor, click on the + signs in the left hand pane to
navigate
to the following registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP3\KB940157

Right click on this key and select Delete from the menu.

Do the same for this key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB940157

Once you deleted these two keys, close the registry editor. Next, reinstall
Windows Search 4.0. Check in Add or Remove programs to see if it is now
listed.
If not, look for the $NtUninstallKB940157$ folder in C:\Windows. "

OEM XP search will search for and within text files and others with no
problem.

I didn't mean I'd stick with 4.0 the but rather the original windows search,
without any indexing. It might mean I'd have to wait quite a while for a
search, but I do it so seldom I probably could live with that.

But I saved your info about Agent Ransack for future needs. If I can't put
up with the waiting I'll install it.

I did finally get rid of 4.0.

Thanks a lot.

Does the term "OEM XP search" refers to the original search app that came
with windows?

I'm going to try to stick with that. I believe that must also support
indexing because I see the note in it that says "indexing is turned off". I
guess that means it can be turned on, but I won't.

Anyway, deleting those registry keys did the trick.

Thanks a lot.

I have an old problem that I tried solving with Microsoft but got no where
so I gave up.

Microsoft Update keeps downloading and trying to install an update for
Visual Studio 2005(KB937060). It downloads it and the installation fails
because I've uninstalled VS2005. Microsoft had me try some things but when
that failed to fix it I agreed to hide the update. Now Update keeps warning
me I have a security update hidden.

Your instructions to delete those keys fixed my 4.0 problem, so I wonder if
you happen to know something similar that might work for my vs2005 problem.

Thanks again

I doubt it would be that much of a wait. :)

Good move.

You're welcome. And yes, "OEM XP search" means the one that came with it. I
leave indexing turned off on mine also. It's just Vista's search that I
don't care for at all.
