I'm running WIN XPII SP2 Home Edition on a Pentium 5. Always before, for
the last 5-6 mos (as long as I have had the XP SP2 program) when I went to
turn on or boot-up the PC, it would go through its paces, go through several
b/w screens, and then go to the splash screen for Windows XP. Well, now
(and for the last 2 days) when I start up, there's a black and white screen,
right before the windows splash screen should occur, and it asks me to
manually pick which system to start! It has WIN XP listed, and it also has
WIN XP Home Edition listed. If I choose the Win XP Home edition, it states
that the program is not installed! From there, thankfully, I can reboot,
but I have to make the same silly choice each time. It NEVER used to do
this. I am completely LOST as to what to do, but I feel like my system is
disintegrating right before me. Thanks.

You need to edit the boot.ini file to eliminate the 'phantom' dual boot system.

Click on START
Click on My Computer
Click on View System Information
Click on Advance Tab
Click on Settings button in the Startup and Recvery section
In the System Startup press the edit button
You will see your current boot.ini file, and it should be amended to look
like this:

WARNING: I recommend that you 'save' the current file as bootold.ini before
making any changes.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect
