My PC does not properly aquire an IP address using DHCP

My Laptop PC is running XP. It is currently assigning a "Automatic Private
Address" 169.254.2.21. I am configured to "Obtain IP address automatically"
via a local DHCP server (Linksys router). I have 2 other PCs on the network
both obtaining the IP address of 192.168.1.101 and 102. All connectivity
works fine with these other PC's. As for the Laptop PC with the problem
obtaining the right IP address, it was working fine on this network for over
12 months until 4 days ago.

Other points. I have a LAN interface and a wireless interface on my laptop
PC and both interfaces assign the "Automatic Private Address".

It seems as if DHCP requests from my PC have stopped working. Looking for
any advice .

The address you see (APIPA) means your computer can't reach a DHCP server.
Are you using another software firewall on this PC? What changed 4 days ago?
Did you remove adware/spyware, perchance?

Yes, I did run my SPY Sweeper program and deleted any spyware found. Is
there something specific I could have removed? I will go back and check
logs, any insight I should be looking for?

Thanks Jim

Very often, nasty malware has a lot of hooks into network components, and
winsock gets destroyed when you remove the malware. Check out

Glad it's working. Now fix your glasses so you can read my nickname
correctly. ;-)

It seems my old problem has returned. SO my PC has reverted to defaulting
to IP address 169.254.2.21. Of course I ran my SPY SWEEPER and I must have
deleted some adware which corrupted my winsock. SO based upon previous
advice I have ran the "LSPFIX" program. Last time this worked flawlessly on
the first try. This time it is not working. Hence after I run the LSPFIX,
my IP address continues to be 169.254.2.21. And yes I have rebooted to make
sure any changes took.

So is there any further help? I'm feeling the pain :-(.
