I agree that bottom posting is preferable to top posting.
Unfortunately the web interface to the MS newsgroups and
Outlook Express make bottom posting hard to do. You can
use an add-on like OE-Quotefix but it introduces other
problems.
Oh..? In what way..? I use OE and find no problem at all bottom posting. I
use Quotefix sometimes, but I actually prefer the cursor to appear at the
top because it gives me a chance to read through the post and trim/snip
where appropriate.
Because of this I tend to respond with whatever
the thread seems to be using. When in Rome do as the
Romans do
I'm not in Rome though, I'm in England..!
If I may state one of my main arguments against top posting, it is that
its adherents rarely trim/snip, so you get the original text plus every
reply again and again and again. Although I do have ADSL, many people
still rely on dialup connections and even if they're not paying by the
minute for the phone call (as was once often the case in the UK) they do
have the problem that a long message takes time to download. There are
numerous other reasons, but that is the main one.
Restricting yourself to an arbitrary set of rules that
not everyone follows is futile in this case. Sometimes
you have to stick up for your priciples but top posting
vs bottom posting is a silly place to draw a line in the
sand.
Maybe, but when someone insists on top posting despite being repeatedly
asked not to (at least as far as replying to my posts is concerned) then
lines do have to be drawn.
Thanks for the sensible reply.
