Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and
verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked
and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You may need
to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that
the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.
Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is selected and then
select View, Choose Details and check before Name, Type, Total Size, and
Free Space.

To increase you free space on your XP partition select Start, All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System
Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore points? Restore
points can be quite large.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore
on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb.
Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time
find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit.
When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

Are you using any Norton utilities? What are you using to back up data
file?

FileSize -a useful tool for use with Windows Explorer when investigating
how disk space is being used.
http://markd.mvps.org/

The download link is not obvious. Click the here in the two sentences of
the web page accessed through the link above. "I can't count the number
of times someone has asked for this. So here is a module you can install
that shows a Folder Size column in Explorer."

Note the Search option in Windows Explorer to search for files over 1
mb. You sort the result in order of size by clicking on size over the
list of files. Search My Computer ensuring you have selected Advanced
Options and clicked on the box before Search System Folders, Search
Hidden Files and Folders and Search Sub-Folders.

Are you using Hibernation?

Be sure you use the "full format" option when installing Windows. Also some
older systems require the FAT32 format before installing Windows XP.

A good way to check what files are on your partition or disk is the free
program Sequoia. www.sequoia.com.

Good luck, Dan S

Follow Gerry's advice, and when you get to the detailed display of your
drive, click the "Size" column header until the arrow points downwards.

What file comes to the top? How big is it?

I am having difficulty making sense of what you are now trying to say.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy.

Partition G has me puzzled. Has it been formatted as NTFS or FAT32?
Please right click on G in Windows Explorer and select Properties to get
this information. The cluster size of 16 kb suggests FAT32.

How is Partion G described in Disk Management? Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management.

The Report says two files with an average size of 42 bytes. So what else
occupies the remaining 15.9 plus gb? What files names can you see?

Try running Error Checker on the G partition. Right click on G in
Windows Explorer and select Properties, Tools, Error Checker, Check Now.

hi Gerry,
I am too puzzled also because nothing appear in the partition G and I don't
know how to get error checking report to know if there is bad clusters or
not
I want to notify u that this partition especially makes its error checking
in the runtime of the windows not on startup as for other partitions do
can I run error checking away from windows or see its content (when I open
partition G from DOS and use dir command nothing appear in G also) because I
think it is a virus

You can view a chkdsk report in Event Viewer but it is often not very
informative. You can also use chkdsk from a command prompt.

Select Start, Run, type "cmd" without quotes and click on OK. Type G:
and hit Enter. Type chkdsk and hit Enter. Copy down the Report after the
process finishs. Type "exit" and hit ENTER to return to Windows.

From the command prompt you can use chkdsk with switchs.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true

Try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.
