My Outlook 2003 sent mail goes into a black hole

Sometime after 5th July, my outgoing email in Outlook 2003 ceased to reach
the addressees; the emails appear in the sent items folder and the
send/receive progress report shows the send as successful, but the email
seems to go no further. I have checked with quite a few people and can find
nobody who has received any email I sent after 5th July. I haven't installed
anything new on my computer, apart from the regular McAffee security updates.
I'd really appreciate some help with this.

Thank you for your response. I went into 'E-mail Accounts and clicked on
'Test Account Settings' and it came back saying that all tests had completed
successfully. Is there another test that I should perform? I have had Outlook
installed on this machine for about a year (after migrating from Outlook
Express) and have only just started having this problem.

You can try disabling the e-mail scanner on your antivirus program and see if
that helps. You can also try asking for a delivery receipt from the
recipient's mail server -- if that server allows delivery receipts, you will
get one back saying the message was delivered successfully to the recipient's
e-mail address. Some servers will send you a message if they do not allow
delivery receipts or read receipts, so at least then you'd know the server
got the e-mail you sent...

If the tests performed successfully you should have 'test mail' msgs in your
inbox, If you havent I would suspect you have some particular 'View' set
Does your ISP have web access to email? if so you might want to check there

Thank you, Jocelyn, I will try disabling my e-mail scanner and see if that
helps. I tried the delivery receipt but I don't receive one. I have tried
sending an email to another user on the same ISP and it doesn't get there.

Thank you for your posting DL. The test performed successfully and I received
the test message in my inbox. However, if I try to send an email to somebody
else, even somebody using the same ISP, the message doesn't get there. It's
as if the outgoing mail gets to my sent items folder but doesn't reach the
mail server. I have checked the send/receive report and it shows the sending
is successful but it just doesn't get anywhere. Thank you for your help.

Hello again Jocelyn. I am using McAfee and disabled spam protection, e-mail
protection and instant messaging protection. I then tried to send another
email but this time it didn't get past my outbox - I received a 530
authentication error . I then re-enabled the protection and the email went
from my outbox to my sent items, but not to the addressee. I tried disabling
again and got more errors, re-enabling then allowed the email to get as far
as my sent items. I am wondering if it could be McAfee and am thinking maybe
I should replace it with Norton. Do you think this might help?

Sadly not. In fact my problems got worse so I have been using my ISP basic
email system. I'm trying to pluck up the courage to re-install Outlook but am
afraid to lose all my emails. Sorry not to be able to give you something
positive.

Thank you very much for this, Brian, I'll have a look at the link and then
try re-installing

This problem seems to have been solved with a re-installation of Outlook.
Thank you to Brian for pointing me to the information re backup/restore
