My Network Places - Windows Explorer Error

J

We have a small network with a Windows 2000 server and a
couple of Windows 2000 Pro machines, as well as several
XP Pro machines.

The problem is this. Whenever someone clicks on a
shortcut in My Network Place to access a folder on the
server, a message is displayed that states:

===========================================
Problem with Shortcut

The drive or network that the shortcut 'target.lnk'
refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is
properly inserted or the network resource is available,
and then try again.
===========================================

This only happens on the XP machines and when OK is
clicked, Explorer navigates to the correct directory.
It's not so much a serious problem as it is really
annoying. I've tried searching the knowledgebase,
technet, and msdn, but have had no luck finding anything
on it.

Does anyone know what the problem might be and how to fix
it?

Thanks.

How did you create the shortcut? Did you drag and drop it
from the start menu? If so, try and right click on the
start menu and go to properties and select classic display
and this will play a functional shortcut for "My Network
Places" icon.

Hope this helps

These shortcuts are all created through the My Network
Places wizard. We used the default name when they were
created. The shortcuts appear as folders under My Network
Places in Windows Explorer. We also get the same error
when opening a file through another program using the
open dialogue in Word, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc.

After re-reading your question I think I misunderstood
your statement. The problem is not when opening up My
Network Places. The problem is when trying to access a
directory (on the server) which has a shortcut listed in
My Network Places in Windows Explorer.
