- "My Network Places" - What password do I use?

I'm running Win'XP Home on two machines. I have the firewalls diabled on
both machines.

I'm successfully pinging each PC from the other.

I'm starting in "My Network Places" on the second PC. When I try to access
the first PC from the second I get a dialog box that asks for a password. I
don't have any passwords set on either machine. Heavily grayed out is the
statement "<Name of first machine>\Guest". The "Guest" account on the first
machine was inactive. I turned it on and tried to set a password. There
wasn't an entry for a password. The Guest account wouldn't accept a
password.

What do I do? What password do I use? How do I set a password?

Enable Guest for network use, on both computers. That's not the same as
activating it for local use.

On the first machine, make sure that the Guest account is enabled for
network access and that it doesn't have a password:

1. Open a command prompt window (Start > Run > cmd)

2. Type this command and press Enter:

net user guest /active:yes

3. Type this command and press Enter:

control userpasswords2

4. Click Guest.

5. Click Reset Password.

6. Click OK without entering a new password.

Enabling or disabling the Guest account in Control Panel > User
Accounts has nothing to do with networking. It determines whether
someone can log on as Guest from the local keyboard.
