My Network Places and loss of access

Here's the problem. I have 2 computers. The main one is running Windows XP
Pro and the other Windows 2000. I have had access to both computers with no
problem until July 10th when security updates were installed by auto update.
I have checked all configurations and even redone them to no avail. When I
try to map drives or access the XP computer through the 2000 computer, the
"Enter Network Password" box with a message " Incorrect password or unknown
username for \\computer name.

When I check the security log in the event viewer on the XP computer it
shows the following:

Event Type: Failure Audit
Event Source: Security
Event Category: Logon/Logoff
Event ID: 529
Date: 7/20/2007
Time: 7:33:51 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: MFMASTER
Description:
Logon Failure:
Reason: Unknown user name or bad password
User Name: Michael
Domain: MICHAELF
Logon Type: 3
Logon Process: NtLmSsp
Authentication Package: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Workstation Name: MICHAELF

Sometimes the Logon Type is a 2

I am at a total loss. Yesterday I rebuilt the Windows 2000 computer thinking
something had become corrupt but that wasn't the case. Then common sense told
me it was something on the Windows XP that was blocking it. I also turned off
all security temporarly and that didn't work. Tried setting up a new user on
both and that didn't work.

Please HELP!

Thanks
Michael

Type 3 is Network logon - network mapping (net use/net view) issue. Check this troubleshooting for more details.

Hi Bob,

I'm a little confused since I'm not a network pro. Both machines have the
same user name and password. I did this because in the past I had the exact
same problem and by doing it this way there was no issues.

In reading the information you provided, it looks like I have to call
Microsoft for the hotfix? Perhaps I'm not understanding what the
documentation is telling me.

It depends. I would check the username and workstation based on the Event viewer. Also in many cases, you may have a program running automatically but using the different password.

Hi Robert,

I just wanted to let you know that I ended up calling Microsoft. After 2
days, 7 hours on the phone and 2 tech support people the issue is resolved.
They had to remote into the destop of both machines. The guy in directory
support for Windows 2000 Pro finally figured out that the Guest account had
to be turned off and turned back on, on both machines.

Microsoft doesn't know why this happened they will be investigating it.
Turns out it was something they have never encountered.

Thanks for all your help in trying to resolve this issue.
