My network consists of 5 computers...4 of them are P2 processors with Win 98
Se and the other one is a P3 with WIN XP SP 2. Problems??? some computers on
my network can see the P3 with WIn xp sp2 some don't....all the ip's are
correct ....the proxy server as well....My question is...can there be some
interference between Win 98 and Win xp sp2....What can i do to share
resources from all the computers knowing the fact that computers with Win 98
cannot see the one with Win xp sp2?
Another bizzare fact is that i can print and sahre resoureces from the win
xp sp 2 PC to the other pc's in my network....but with difficulties...some
time it works some time it doesn't!
Please help me

.... is not accessible

Message: "....is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. Network path was not found."

Resolutions:
1) make sure no any firewall blocks the LAN traffic.
2) make sure you have created the same workgroup, and the same username on
w2k/xp for logging on a remote computer.
3) check user's rights.
4) you may want to enable guest account on w2k/xp.
5) if you are using simple file sharing, you may try to disable it and
re-share the drive manually.
6) if it is mixed OS (win98, NT, ME and W2K/XP) network, enable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP.
7) make sure the Computer Browser service is started if all computers are
w2k/xp.
8) stop Computer Browser service on win9x, ME and NT if this is a mixed OS
network.
9) cache credential by using net use \\computername\share /user:username
command (it is better to have the username logon shared computer).
10) if you have tried enabling netbios over tcp/ip but doesn't work, you may
try to load netbeui (loading netbeui may slow your network).
11) Make sure the server service is running.
12) If you can see the share in Network Neighborhood but not access it, this
issue may be resolved by verifying that both the share permissions and the
NTFS partition permissions are correctly configured for individual user or
group access.

Vlad,

On a LAN with Windows 98 and Windows XP mixed, the problem is very likely the
browser subsystem (I'm not talking about Internet Explorer here). The browsers
for Windows 98 and Windows XP don't work well together.

Identify the 2 Windows 98 computers that stay online the most, designate them
the browsers for the LAN. Make sure the browser service is running on the
browser computers. Disable the browser on the Windows XP computer. Control
Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser
service shows with Status = Stopped and Disabled. Disable the browser on the
other Windows 98 computers:
http://cms.simons-rock.edu/faq_by_subtopic/node138.html

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Then power the browser computers on, and finally
the other computers on.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers give the same result.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
