My network access just died

Today my laptop decided that it didn`t want to connect to the internet via my
work network. I rebooted to no avail, so I did a system restore to undo the
updates that got installed last night. At that point the laptop decided that
it would not only fail to connect to the internet, but the school network as
a whole. When I try to set up a network connection it tells me there are no
wireless networks in range, but ignores the cable in the back. I checked my
network adapter but it says it`s fine, but when I was in `Network and Sharing
Centre` and clicked on `Full Map`, it said that my adapter was not connected.
I don`t know if it`s significant that the only network adapter currently
listed in `Hardware` specifically calls itself a wireless adapter.

Any suggestions?
