problem. I have turned my pc on and now all of my mus,
pictures and movie files have been deleted. the folders
are still there but are now empty. I now have no idea why
this has happned but i have lost 12 GB worth of data. Win
xp can now go to hell. Im going back to win98.

If anyone at all has had this problem please let me know.

Have you checked for a virus? Also do a search for .mp3, .wmv, .wma, .mpg,
etc.
I don't think it is the fault of XP.

But they do. I have exactley the same problem. When I
booted up all "my download" folder had gone.I run full
anti virus (paid for)updating every 3 hours on DSL so a
virus is not a problem. I also have norton protected
recycle bin and the directory wasnt in there either. Xp
is a joke and I wish I had never bought the machine with
it installed. 98 is far superior.

have you created a new user? Where was your "Download" folder? Are any
other folders in that location missing? have you tried a search
(including hidden and system folders?). Your respondent was correct -
windows just doesn't "delete" folders. certainly not in my long
experience. It may HIDE them, but that's a different matter.

98 "superior"? that MUST be a troll.Either that or you're stark raving
mad.

The location was just c:\my downloads. I am the only user
of the machine. I can view system and hidden folders and
even downloaded the old winfile.exe and it just isnt
there. I had about 200megs of downloads in there like my
original virus download etc. They were mainly programs I
bought over the net which is a big pain as I now dont
have the original downloads if I need to reinstall. it
means digging out receipts and order numbers. I recreated
c;\my downloads without any problems like "folder already
exists" etc. I dont understand how it got past norton
protected bin either.

why do you say xp is better than 98. i hate it. its hard
to navigate around in explorer. its looks like they spent
more time on making it look pretty. the only good part is
when you add hardware and it takes over installing
drivers etc. Maybe its me but I think with 98 you could
dig in deep but in XP i think its just a mess.

XP is far superior to 98 in terms of memory management, lack of crashes,
(and if an app crashes then it doesn't (usually) take the whole OS with
it), networking, file encryption, and many other areas. Try setting it
to the "classic" view and you'll get something like the "98" appearance.
What is "hard" about navigating in Explorer? Seems fairly simple to me.

I agree Michael - definitely a BCAK or ID-ten-T error to me...

Your whole life is a BCAK and/or ID-ten-T, you friggin' moron. You look in a

John B,
I make a post suggesting they should run a virus scan and a search for the
missing files, and the two of you have to make unnecessary muck about the
subject. I see little difference in either of you. Egos driven to the max.
Please; can we all get a grasp of what the newsgroups are meant to
accomplish! John, lately your posts have served no purpose other than trying
to push the limit of bad taste and what alias you can still post with that
doesn't get filtered. You used to be better than that.

It's good to keep all your personal files on a different hard drive or
partition. That way, when you do a clean install of Windows (which I do
twice a year), there is less to backup. I don't go along with where
Microsoft thinks I need to save files!

Bernard,

Somewhere along the way, someone (you or the folks at PC World), created
the following ID's:

bernard Lawes
bernie
users.windows
default user windows

The ID's "all users" and "default user" are standard windows profiles.

Which ID do you use to login? "bernard Lawes" or "benie"?

With the admininstrator ID, move the stuff from the ID's that you don't
use into your own space, and change the owner from what they are to what
you want.

You can read more about system admininstration in the "help" that came
with your computer.

When you download soemthing, or do anything with files, take note of
where it all goes by opening up the folder structure on the dialogue box
and look.

ps: I get amusement listening to the "experts" at PC World consulting
with customers. In general, they don't pass on wise advice. I'm not
saying they are are incompetent, but their motivating factors seem only
to be to sell you extra warranty insurance coverage for "piece of mind".
