I've just recently successfully installed XP on a
previously fine Windows 98 SE machine. It has an internal
winmodem. Last night I powered down my machine (turned it
off , no hibernate or standby) after being connected to
the net (can't remember whether I disconnected before
shutting down), and this morning when I picked up the
phone (the computer still off and untouched) there was no
signal, just a faint barely audible hiss, different to the
sound of a normal data transfer connection. I could only
get the phone to operate properly again by disconnecting
the modem at the back of the PC (remember it is still
switched off). How can this be?
Regards
